A couple weeks ago, I watched Scott Pilgrim for the first time since I saw it in theaters. I was really worried I wouldn’t enjoy it anymore, but, fortunately, I was very wrong. The film is absolutely a time capsule, and there’s a lot to unpack (good and bad). But the filmmaking is also so marvelously, intricately done that it’s really hard not to find something to admire.
The things that really slipped my mind were the transitions. Director Edgar Wright is constantly shifting and slamming from one scene and location into another like little magic tricks, transforming an object, person, or sound from one location so perfectly into another, creating a result that feels both funny and action-packed, even when nothing’s happening.
